Poitou Charentes
Bordeaux Aquitaine

Bordeaux is famous for it's wine production but that's no the only business to have left it's mark on the city. Nicknamed the 'Port de la Lune' (Port of the Moon) due to the enormous curve of the river in the city centre the port of Bordeaux has always been very active. Millions of barrels of wine have passed through this port but it has also transported precious woods and agricutural materials around the globe.

Today all activities associated with the port have moved north and the city offers a 10km long panorama of the 18th century building facades of aged white stone, most of which originated in the limestone quarries of Saint-Émilion.

Bordeaux also boasts a major university and the influence of the student population can be fealt all over the city. Like Spanish cities Bordeaux has a festive spirit and the long sunny Autumn encourages residents to take it easy and enjoy people watching from a table in the quartier Saint Pierre.

For those who want to get away from the city, the huge pine forest just outside of town is a must, not to mention the deserted Atlantic beaches hidden behind the dunes along the coast. The hilly countryside also offers many opportunites to enjoy the culture and history of the area while being surrounded by vineyards. The choices are endless.
