Culture in Champagne Charleville-Mézières, known for the Place Ducale, an exact replica of the Place des Vosges in Paris, and for the International Festival of Puppet Theatre that takes place every three years. (The next one is this year, in September). The Arthur Rimbaud Museum assembles examples of the great poet’s work as well as caricatures, paintings and other memorabilia. Reims huses one of the most famous French Gothic cathedrals, and not to be missed either are the Palace of Tau and the 9th Century Saint-Remi Abbey church. The Johann Festival takes place in Reims in June every year. This year, Reims will celebrate the art-deco style.www.reims-tourisme.com Troyes is the old town with its half-timbered houses was built in the form of a champagne cork, as this was the historic capital of the area. The Troyes area has the largest area of stained glass windows in Europe – nearly 10,000 square metres. The Nuits de Champagne Festival takes place each end of October –beginning of November. www.tourisme-troyes.com Langres sits upon a hill and the old town is surrounded by four kilometres of ramparts. Beautiful Renaissance houses dot the city. The Halbardier Festival takes place every August. www.tourisme-langres.com
Château de la Motte Tilly - This historical jewel, listed as a Historic Monument since 1946, was built in 1754 for the abbot Terray, the future controller of Louis XV’s finances, and it has preserved all its original beauty despite its age. It offers a wonderful insight into the sophisticated décor and atmosphere of an 18th century home.
