Heritage Theatres, Roman aquaducts, churches, châteaux, fortified villages, museums... The Rhone Alpes offers an abundance of artistic and cultural heritage. The region’s renowned cultural legacy is widespread, but it can also boast an international reputation for the historic site of Lyon. Recognised by Unesco since 5 December 1998 as a World Heritage Site for its “remarkable universal value”, Lyon is one of the largest sites in the world along with the city of Prague.

Prehistoric Heritage
Some prehistoric sites clearly give an indication of what daily life in the Neolithic era was like. One example is the “Baigneurs” village on the southern edge of Lac de Paladru in the Isère, which dates back 5,000 years. Ruins and tools were found at the site, revealing that the community already knew how to work the soil. It is possible to see these rare objects, both on site and in the archeological museum at Charavines. Traces of Prehistoric man living at the water’s edge have also been found on the shores of Lac d’Annecy and Lac du Bourget, the relics of which are now displayed at the Musée Savoisien de Chambéry.
