Lake Bourget and Annecy in Rhône-Alpes
Lake Bourget
Considered the largest natural lake in France, it shelters around fifty species of fish. During the summer, Lake Bourget is held in great regard for sailing, water skiing and diving, since the temperature of the water is between 20 and 25oC. As it enjoys a fairly mild microclimate, the lake is home to many species of Mediterranean plants.
The lake is surrounded by lively towns such as Aix-les-Bains and Le Bourget du Lac, whilst its two extremities are listed areas, protecting its exceptional biotope.
The area to the south of Lake Bourget is symbolic of the wetlands, with its lakeside area, its reed beds, its marshes, ponds, canals and wetland forests. There are two observatories accessible from the Bourget du Lac, where you can observe the fauna without disturbing it.

Lake Annecy
Rescuing the lake took several decades but today it boasts the purest water in Europe. While historical treasures from Veyrier to Talloires line the sunny banks (the little village of Veyrier has been beautifully restored), nature gently takes over from Angon to Doussard. To appreciate it fully, a tour of the lake by bike, roller skate or on foot is a must.
The Bout du Lac nature reserve, at the southern end of Lake Annecy, contains flora and fauna that is typical of wetland areas (orchids, waterfowl, insects, reptiles and amphibians) as well as the tracks left by beavers, which you can discover thanks to the marked footpath. Do not forget to stop off at Talloires abbey, which dates from the 17th century and has been converted into a charming 4-star hotel and restaurant. In the cloisters, the cells of the Benedictine monks have become bedrooms. Do not miss the prayer room, a listed historical monument.
