Loire France's longest, most majestic river, the Loire, takes 1,000km to travel from its source in the volcanic Ardèche mountains to the Atlantic. The river Loire take you to a journey across farming plains where horses and white Charolais cows graze, through tight gorges, past slope-side villages and by more or less bustling towns to reach the volcanic heights, and even the odd volcanic lake.
The most impressive city of the upper Loire is Le Puy-en-Velay with its churches and religious statues on top of surreal rocky pinnacles. Montbrison and St-Galmier are also two interesting cities as well as St-Etienne a former coal-mining which has been declared a Ville d'Art et d'Histoire for its fine museums.
From the wide Loire plain, ruined medieval castles look down from the distant heights of the Mont de la Madeleine, Monts du Forez and Montagnes du matin. The area's most famous castle is the Renaissance Bastide d'Urfé.
