Museums in Rhône-Alpes Only the Ile-de-France has more museums than the Rhone Alpes, which has over 200. From some of the finest art museums in Lyon, Saint-Etienne, Grenoble and Chambéry to excellent regional ethnographic museums.
Ethnographic Museums
Over the last few years there has been a growing trend for historic, natural areas to publicise their heritage or their traditional culture. These ethnographic museums, sometimes known as eco museums, are springing up all over the place. They feature traditional occupations and skills, or local customs.
Rhone Alpes is home to Cerdon’s Musée du Cuivre (copper museum), the Musée de l’Alambic (stills) at Saint-Désirat, Musée de la Lavande at Montguers or the silk museum at Mont boucher-sur-Jambon, Maison des Canuts (silk workers’ centre) in Lyon or even the Musée des Tresses et des Lacets (braids and laces) at La Terrasse-sur-Dorlay.
Museums of Faith and Traditions
The Musée Matheysin at La Mure, the Musée du Roannais in Roanne, the Musée Savoisien in Chambéry, the Musée Alpin at Chamonix are all dedicated to religious beliefs, to traditions and to daily life.
