Romanesque Art in Rhône-Alpes
From monasteries to small rural churches, mural frescoes to sculptures, the region’s Romanesque architecture displays a wide diversity of expression and influence. In the areas of Lyon, the Savoie and the Vivarais, Romanesque art is primarily exhibited within church buildings and rural chapels, with their single nave and minimalist décor. A good example of this is the Basilique de Saint-Martin at Aime, in the Savoie. In the Drôme, the cathedral of Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux, and the churches at Saint-Restitut and La Garde-Adhémar show a provencal influence, integrating some elements of ancient art into their design (pilasters, friezes under a false triforium, and doors with triangular pediments). In the Bresse, there are several Romanesque churches built to a Burgundian design whose characteristics include a rounded, semi-circular apse covered with flat tiles, a slightly wider middle part and fine woodwork in the nave. Other buildings combine both influences: the Basilique Saint-Martin-d’Ainay in Lyon and Vienne’s basilica dedicated to St Peter. In the Parc Régional du Pilat, the 12th C Romanesque monastery - the Chartreuse de Sainte-Croix-en-Jarez – was later turned into a “bastide” or fortified village when it was sold as national property in 1792.
