Saône-et-Loire Southern Burgundy comprises a total of six distinct regions, namely: Autunois-Morvan, Burgundy Bresse, Chalonnais, Charolais-Brionnais, Creusot-Montceau, and Mâconnais-Clunisois.
Whether navigating the waterways, hiking, riding horseback, or when cycling or roller skating in one of the department's cities or along the 120-km stretch of "Voie Verte" (cycling path for bicycles, roller skates…), the visitor can enjoy the wealth of renowned historical heritage sites.
Head out to discover the centres of Romanesque art and architecture (Autun, Cluny, Paray-le-Monial, Tournus), celebrated places of worship (Kagyu Ling Buddhist Centre, Taizé Ecumenical Centre or the Paray-le-Monial Pilgrimage Centre), vestiges from both prehistoric and Gallo-Roman times (Solutré, Bibracte, Azé), the Burgundy Castle Route.
In the savoury authenticity of local dishes served at a rural inn or at one of the fifty highly-rated gourmet restaurants, the art of fine cuisine is readily apparent in the famous Bresse poultry or Charolais beef, to name just two… the meal are always suitably accompanied by famous vintages coming from the Mâconnais, Beaujolais and Côte Chalonnaise winegrowing areas.
