Dune du Pilat Aquitaine
The natural phenomenan that is the Dune du Pyla or 'Dune du Pilat' is the largest natural sand dune in the world and sits 60km from Bordeaux in the South of the Arcachon Bay.
The dune is constantly moving inland as if being forced into retreat by the crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean. This movement also forces the fine sand to pile ever higher so the entire dune is steadliy growing. With an altitude of 117 metres, the Pyla Dune is the most visited 'natural site' in Aquitaine. Although there is a stairway to make the climb easier, its upper reaches can seem quite tough. However the view from the top out over the Bay of Arcachon, the ocean and the forest makes it more than worth the effort!
This is a truly awe-inspiring sight that should not be missed by any visitor to Aquitaine. The dune receives thousands of visitors every year and they are well catered for with on site eateries, sports equipment hire shops and guest houses. It is a favourite among paragliders and sand boarders so those seeking a thrill should definitely head to the world's largets dune.
