Walking and Cycling in Midi-Pyrénées

The Great Valleys

The Midi-Pyrénées boasts numerous valleys, which are appreciated for their natural resources and cultural diversity. Five valleys stand out among the rest: those of the Dordogne, the Aveyron, the Tarn, the Lot, and the Garonne. These are the settings of ancient adventures with villages, fortified towns and châteaux nestled within their hospitable hollows. New adventures include a great many walks, hikes and cycling. The valleys are key-points in the area for those who wish to discover Midi-Pyrenees’ secrets.

The Great Cirques and other Remarkable Sites

As the region’s gigantic glaciers disappeared, cirques are one of the distinctive characteristics of the Pyrenean massif. In 1997, UNESCO inscribed the Cirque de Gavarnie on to the World Heritage List. But such well-earned fame must not stop you discovering other just as lovely sites, such as the wild Cirque de Troumouse, the Cirque d'Espingo situated in the Luchon massif and also the Cirque de Cagateille near Aulus.

Spa visitors or walkers passing through Cauterets must not miss the Pont d'Espagne and its festival of cascades. Also do not overlook the Néouvielle nature reserve with its 70 high-altitude lakes such as the lac d'Aumar and the lac d'Orédon.

Sport and Leisure

The Midi-Pyrénées proposes a range of activities that is as varied as its scenery. For water and aerial sports: hundreds of centres and specialists are here to help you learn or offer improvement training. Other activities on the menu are canyoning, rafting and hydrospeed, climbing, paragliding and sail flying.
