Watersports Auvergne Auvergne, being known as the "land of lakes and volcanoes" is rich with numerous water sports. Natural and artificial lakes are in use all year round for sporting activities. From fishing and swimming to water skiing and kayaking, there is no limit to what can be done. The spectacular Volcanoes that surround the lakes and rivers create the perfect background. The winter arrives and the lakes and rivers may freeze but the fun continues with lakes becoming ice rinks and waterfalls becoming climbing walls. Fishing even continues all year round as on lakes such as Lac du Guery fishermen drill holes in the ice to fish, giving a North Pole feel to the place.

There are, in all, twenty one different lakes and reservoirs where swimming is permitted. Lac Servière attracts many swimmers with its amazing surrounding forest and picturesque views. The more active of sporting is to be found along the main rivers, the Allier being the largest river in France, let alone Auvergne. Canoeing, kayaking, rafting and canyoning are all found on the rampant waters of the Allier, the Ardeche and Sornin rivers.
The fish to be caught are perch, trout, carp and salmon. There are close to twenty different lakes to fish in not to mention the Allier up which salmon swim from its beginning, 900kms distance, in the Atlantic Ocean.
