Rafting uses an inflatable craft, of various sizes, steered by an onboard pilot, whereas hydrospeed is the descent of a river using a float whilst wearing flippers for navigating rapids and currents. These two sports require fast-flowing rivers, which is why they are often carried out on the same stretches of water.
Rafting is the ideal way for groups to discover a river. There are different levels, from Class 2 for beginners to Class 4 for the more experienced (rivers in France are classified from 1 to 5).
The river Arve is a class 2 river in the Vallée de l'Arve in Passey as the foot of Mont Blanc. It provides a 7km route as far as Sallances, interspersed with 6 rapids, for a first introduction to white water.
For a more sporting itinerary, chose the river Giffre, one of the best known rivers in the northern Alpes, in the Samoëns valley. This is a 7km Class 3 route passing through the Tines gorge. Thrills guaranteed!
The Dranses in Thonon les Bains also offers a highly enjoyable Class 3 route, alternating between rocks and rapids, over 5km.
