Wide Open SpacesA beach 250 kilometres long
A beach two hundred and fifty kilometres long. Green, white and blue. Seen from the sky, the Aquitaine coastline draws a vertical line from the mouth of the Gironde Estuary to Spain, forming a beach that is no less than 250 kilometres (150 miles) long, all in a single stretch. Behind the dunes, a series of lakes has formed and vegetation has flourished.
Europe's largest forest
The fight against encroaching sand and drain the marshes, people undertook enormous drainage and planting work at the beginning of the 19th century. They chose a tree that was quite happy growing on sand and did not mind the heat: the maritime pine. Today, those trees form a forest of one million hectares (almost 2.5 million acres) providing a remarkable natural habitat. Through it run a large number of footpaths have been specially laid out to give visitors the opportunity to observe and discover the plant and wildlife. In the heart of the forests, the micro-climate created by the waters of the River Leyre has given birth to an astonishing canopy of giant ferns arching over the river and just waiting to be discovered by canoe.
Arcachon Bay, an exceptional environment
An inland sea of 150 km2, The Bay of Arcachon is ideal for swimming, sailing and pleasure-boating. It is also a natural habitat, the realm of the oyster and a fabulous nature reserve for birds from all over northern Europe. Three natural wonders have become the emblems of the fascinating beauty of the area: The Pyla Dune, Arguin Sandbank and the Ile aux Oiseaux with its "cabanes tchanquées" huts built on stilts above the level of sea...
