The thrill of the waves The region's number one asset is space, synonymous with freedom. 250 km long, the Aquitaine coastline is a surfing play-ground of infinite variety offering waves that are ideal for all the different disciplines, from bodyboard to longboard, the thrill of riding a tube or performing a thousand figures on the sort of beachbreaks dreams are made of. Today an integral part of the international circuit, Aquitaine happily continues to cultivate its own specific culture - one based on a shared approach to life and fashion uniting those who surf on the sea and those who surf on the snow, not forgetting skateboarding and roller-skating enthusiasts.
Off Saint-Jean-de-Luz, a wave of international stature Its name is Belharra. It forms when there is a heavy swell in shallows about 1 km south of the exit of the port of Saint-Jean-de-Luz - a spot hat has long struck fear into the heart of sailors. It ranks among the 5 biggest waves in the world. A wall of water 8 to 12 metres high, a wave that nobody had ever dared take on. That is, until 10 April 2002, when 6 local surfers decided to defy the monster. And they succeeded, 12 hours later, the photographs of the exploit flashed around the globe on the internet, sending a tremor through the surfing world, Belharra had entered the history books.
