Nord/Pas De Calais

Nord-Pas de Calais

Nord-pas-de-Calais is made up of deux départements (counties): Nord and Pas-de-Calais

The Nord-Pas de Calais is a region of startling contrasts. From the breathtaking beauty of the stunning cliffs at Cap Blanc Nez and the pale sandy beaches of the Opal Coast to chic elegant towns like Arras and Lille where the superb Flemish architecture breathes the region’s rich history, there is something to entice everyone.

Whether you want to relax and take in the scenery – three national parks take up a quarter of the area – or try your hand at an exciting water sport, the choice is yours.

Visitors with families will love the child friendly beach resorts, amusement parks and fascinating museums.

Gourmets will have a ball sampling the vast range of delicious food, wines and real ales the region has to offer.

This is a region with ‘art de vivre’ where everyone takes time to enjoy the good things in life. It’s what makes a holiday in this region really special!

Cycle Routes

The French are mad about cycling and France, with its wide open spaces, is the ideal place to enjoy the sport. Look no further than Nord-Pas-de-Calais where 60 sign-posted cycle routes wend their way through pretty towns and villages on peaceful roads.

Opal Light

Opal Light is 800,000 years old. The rolling plane caved in and metres the North Sea and the Channel surged into the passage. Now, on the other side of the submerged valley the English coast forms a white barrier visible to the naked eye.

On The Water

680 km of waterways, 1100 km of banks for walking or fishing, excursions on and around the water taking you to Belgium and looping you back to France!

Welcome aboard Planet NAUSICAA

Wartime Memorials

The clash of battles and cries of the wounded is replaced by the silence of remembrance. The memory of the wars of the 20th Century is one of the principal elements of the region’s identity. Although there are places where you are simply left to your imagination, others are intrinsically devoted to commemoration.

Culture in Nord-Pas de Calais

A border land rich in abundant resources, torn between the Holy Roman Empire and France, Nord-Pas de Calais was until 1945 a land of invasions. Conditions that formed an industrious and hard-working people, proud of its power and strength but open to all trade and the best of all cultures.

Enticing sandy beaches run for an astonishing 120 kilometres from Dunkerque to Berck-sur-Mer, lined with dunes and majestic cliffs. On the most glorious headlands, Les Deux Caps, in the national regional park of outstanding natural beauty, hikers are excellently catered for.

History of Nord-Pas de Calais

Nord-Pas de Calais names are a roll call of European as well as British and French history, from Julius Caesar to William the Conqueror, Edward III and Napoleon. Agincourt’s museum echoes to Kenneth Branagh declaiming Shakespeare and Guines commemorates Henry VIII meeting Francois I at the Field of the Cloth of Gold.

A Taste of Adventure

Here people like to live in groups and give themselves room all around to express themselves. Rambling is an important part of this large rural region with its 1,600 bell-towers.
