The minimum age for driving a car in France is 18 years old.  If you wish to drive in France you must carry a full, valid driver's license, insurance and vehicle documents. If your stay is for less than 6 months, you may drive your vehicule freely in France. If you are driving a vehicle that does not belong to you then written permission from the registered owner may also be requested. Please note that no one is allowed to drive on a provisional license.

No special requirements for holders of European Union driving licences. Otherwise an international driving licence is necessary. There are 8000 km of toll motorways with rest areas and service stations. The latest traffic news can be found on www.bison-fute.gouv.fr

Parking in towns and cities normally incurs a charge (ticket machines located on pavements or in underground car parks).

You should take particular care when driving in France as driving regulations and customs are different from those in the UK. Roads in France, particularly motorways, are of an excellent standard but speed limits are higher than in the UK and the accident rate is higher.

The French police strictly apply speeding restrictions and if you exceed speed limits you will face heavy on-the-spot fines. In addition radar detectors are illegal in France - if you are caught with such equipment in your vehicle, you are liable to a fine, confiscation of the device and the vehicle.

The wearing of seat belts is compulsory and traffic drives on the right. Unless otherwise indicated, priority must be given to vehicules coming from the right. The speed limits are 50 kph (31 mph) in town, 90 kph (56 mph) on main roads, 110 kph (68 mph) on expressways and 130 kph (80 mph) on motorways.

The regulation on driving under the influence of alcohol is strictly enforced. The permitted alcohol level in France is 0.5 g, which is barely two small glasses of wine, so follow the advice of the well-known French slogan 'drink or drive, you have to choose!'

Almost all roads in Corsica are mountainous and narrow, with numerous bends.  You should be extra vigilant and beware of wandering animals.  The majority of road accidents occur during the tourist season.
