France woos diners with lower taxes

The French government has approved a cut in VAT from July 1st from 19.6% to 5.5% enabling restaurant and café owners to reduce prices by about 10%. Jonathan White from www.vfbholidays.co.uk is quoted as saying this should have a positive impact on bookings as France is still a great place to eat out.

'I just happened to be lucky'
James Dellingpole recalls how 47 RM Commando's heroism by taking Port-en-Bessin - a German stronghold - led to helping end the war. It is difficult to understand how this pretty fishing village had such strategic importance during WWII but all along the coast you can still find memories and to those who return to celebrate this 65th Anniversary of D-Day we are eternally grateful.
Europe - it's cheaper than you think
Although the pound has been struggling against the euro it is recovering slightly and only 12% worse than last year. The shopping basket comparison makes France quite expensive but for eating out it is a different story. Prices for a meal out in France are generally about a pound a head more than in Turkey including house wine at about £43 for two. With VAT coming down this should further improve says Nick Trend. Average accommodation prices across France can seem more expensive but with cheap ferry deals the further north you go the cheaper it is. The south west can also be £300 cheaper pp than the Cote d'Azur including flights and car hire.

With no Tour Operators offering a package they are advised to take the www.eurostar.com to Paris and the TGV onwards. Tickets for the festival are only about £7.60 and it's only about nine miles from Tours where accommodation is easy to find.

48 Hours in Bordeaux
Bordeaux's massive regeneration programme is due to finish next month and to be celebrated with the Festival de la Fleuve or River Festival. This city has been transformed into something much more vibrant with lots to see and do apart from the surrounding vineyards. As well as great architecture and cuisine it worth doing a river cruise. A vintage tour
Andy Lynes takes a weeks wine tour around the largest wine growing region in the world - the Languedoc-Rousillon which produces two billion bottles a year. With regional production has gradually moved from mass low quality to lower numbers of high end wine. A variety of ventures have been created many involving non-French nationals. Wine Tourism is becoming more popular and the opportunity to tour, learn and stay in a luxury gîte is very appealing. Vin Ecole is the perfect way to do it.

Landmarks of a great liberation
This year is the 65th anniversary of D-Day and Robert Hardman tells how to experience the best of it. There are 26 museums plus other monuments and he decides to break the trip into three chunks. The first is the British Airborne Sector which is where it all began. The second is the British beaches and the third is the American Sector. All along this coast there are memories from pill boxes to man-made islands. It is well worth the visit.

Star break: Cannes
The Cannes film festival is now over but for those wanting to experience the city of glitz you can still take a stroll along the croisette. If you haven't quite got the celebrity purse but want to shop the old port area will more than likely have something to suit in its narrow cobbled streets. Visit the ancient Musée de la Castre to see its artefacts and the view from the panoramic tower. Public beaches can be crowded but a La Croisette is better for a small admission charge says Catherine Boyle.
